IMPROV 301: THE HAROLD
In this course, students will build on the foundational improv skills developed in previous levels by learning The Harold — a long-form improv structure that begins with a single audience suggestion that unfolds into a fully improvised performance.
The Harold encapsulates a bunch of techniques and scene mechanics that students will take with them as they grow as improvisers.
Students will learn all of the following and more:
- premise/theme of individual scenes
- character building and relationships
- second/third beats
- different kinds of beats (time dash, analogous, alternate perspective, etc)
- game of scene/character/relationship
- following the thread of different established worlds
- side support/walk-ons/walk-offs/tag runs
Each week blends improv warm-ups, skill-building exercises, scene work, group reflection and instructor feedback. Whether your goal is to perform or simply play, this course will help you bring your full authentic self to the stage.

Your Instructor: Ralph Andracchio (he/him) is a Philly based artist and for the past 17 years has been performing, teaching, directing, and producing comedy all over the US. He has performed and taught at festivals in NYC, LA, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit and Raleigh, as well as taught classes and directed shows in his native Philadelphia. With his time at Philly Improv Theater as Artistic Director or as a curriculum consultant at Liberty Improv Theater, he has always strived to use improv as a conduit to tell more stories, explore more relationships, and challenge performers and audiences to think differently about themselves and each other. He has also co-taught an engineering class at UPenn and used improv to help students think differently about how to approach different problems from a new perspective.
Ralph is currently co-host of the wildly popular and award-winning sex education/ comedy show Porn Stash, one half of the duo Sad Trombone with fellow homosexual Steve Kleinedler, and a co host of the podcast Cookbook Obscura, and along with friends and fellow comedians Aubrie Williams and Shannon DeVido invites guests to make obscure recipes found in obscure cookbooks and talk about how bad it is.
